Swanage Jubilee Mural Unveiled

Swanage Jubilee Mural

Throughout June, a number of our talented artists worked through their lunch breaks to create the stunning backdrop for the Swanage Jubilee Mural, unveiled by the Mayor in a special ceremony on 30th June 2022. Art Teacher Mrs Saganic accompanied the students to the ceremony, held on the seafront where the mural now has pride of place.

[Students created the backdrop design across three 6ft boards, onto which the ceramic pieces were fixed before the whole piece was coated with yacht varnish to protect it from the elements.]

The creation of the mural was led by ceramicist Dawn Clark and was a collaboration across four schools. It featured ceramic elements made by students of the Purbeck View School, Wareham Primary and St Mary's Primary which sit atop the background designed and painted by our students.

The mural design is even more delightful close-up, where the detail of both the background and the ceramic tiles can be appreciated. Features include fossils, a swan, a dolphin and a steam train which symbolise connections between the Queen and the local area. There are some cheeky corgis too, created by the students at St Mary's Primary School!

The mural was created as part of the Purbeck Art Weeks Young Artists Programme, and sponsors included the Dorset Community Foundation of Arts Council England.
