Sport

Leading healthy, active lives

At the Swanage School we educate, encourage and empower students through sport. Students take part in a wide range of physical activities during PE sessions over the course of a year - such as athletics, badminton, basketball, dance, dodge ball, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby, soft ball, tennis and volleyball. We also include watersports in our curriculum - for example, kayaking, rafting and sailing sessions - run in conjunction with local experts and making the most of our fantastic location on the coast.

Local connections

Students have the opportunity to meet and be coached by experts from local clubs, for example Swanage Cricket Club, Wareham Rugby Club and Cumulus Outdoors, and links with Bournemouth University Sports Department have provided sporting opportunities for our students. Our student sports ambassadors work with local primary schools, gaining valuable leadership skills and encouraging younger children to become involved with sport.

Representing the school

Students have plenty of opportunities to compete in district sport, representing The Swanage School, in both individual and team sports such as football, rugby, netball, athletics and basketball. Our sports ambassador students also have opportunities to represent the school by helping at primary school outreach sessions and sports days.

After school clubs

Sports are not restricted to PE lessons. At The Swanage School we have a wide range of after school sports clubs such as girls and boys football, badminton, and netball. All age groups and agility levels are welcome.

Sports day

Our sports day is an exciting annual event with all students off time-table for the day and where fun, healthy competition is the order of the day!

Sports facilities

The Swanage School sports hall is a full-size indoor hall marked out for badminton (four courts), 5/6-a-side football / informal hockey, netball, basketball (match hoops plus practice hoops on the side walls) and volleyball. A height-adjustable net can span the full length of the hall to enable larger numbers to practice short tennis, badminton or volleyball, and cricket nets are also in situ.

Outside are the two pitches - one grass, one hard surface - and the outdoor all-weather pitch, which is an artificial turf pitch with rebound fences and inset goal areas. It is designed for 5/6-a-side football and informal hockey but can accommodate a wide range of other sports and activities.
