Where relationships are at the heart of the school and
the school is at the heart of the community

Our Facilities

The Swanage School's buildings were designed to fit with our 'human scale' philosophy, providing state-of-the-art learning spaces which mirror our innovative approach to teaching.

The gull-wing building designed by architect Jestico + Whiles contains maths, science and computer labs in one wing, while the other has the library, English, languages and humanities.

A large art studio is at the centre of the first floor, with panoramic views of the Purbeck hills and a gallery space on the balcony above the hall. The central hall can seat the entire school for assemblies and dining and adjoins music rooms and a drama studio with a folding wall that doubles as the main stage. Food is served at the rear of the main hall, which opens onto the playground and playing field for outdoor eating in good weather.

We offer a wide range of activities and spaces for hire.

The administration of this is managed by SchoolsPlus

Outside areas

Directly outside the ground-floor classrooms are social areas, including a large entrance plaza, a hard-surface playground and sports court and an area for outdoor sculpture and carving.

There are grass pitches (one full-sized and one smaller pitch shared with St Mark's Primary next door) and across the car park is the sports hall and all-weather games court. Beyond that is space for a permaculture and science gardens and a nature area.

Visiting the School

We welcome all parents to The Swanage School, and there are many opportunities throughout the year to visit for formal events such as authentic assessment evenings (see the assessment page), shows and concerts.

Each September we have scheduled tours where parents of prospective students can come and see the school in operation.

If you want to visit us at any other time you are very welcome, but please phone beforehand on 01929 500599 to arrange the best time as the school is a busy place. All visitors must report to reception at the front of the school, where you will be welcomed and given a visitor badge.
