The Edge of Space Project

The Swanage School Edge of Space Project is a high altitude balloon payload of student designed experiments sent into the stratosphere to gain real data for ground based research

Our aim is to build a reusable miniature science lab to house student designed experiments and capable of being placed into the stratosphere by means of a weather balloon. As is common with many near space balloon projects we will of course collect still and video footage from the payload during its ascent and descent, however our additional focus will be on planning, carrying out and analysis of a range of experiments.

Our launch window is planned to coincide with the Global Space Balloon Challenge which takes place between 10th & 27th April 2015. Our team is one of 145 international groups planning to launch during this period (depending on favourable launch conditions). You can find details of the event at www.balloonchallenge.org

We have recently recruited a team of 30 pupils to work on the project and we now formulating our plans to realise our aims. From after half term this website will be updated weekly with updates on our progress, as well as pictures and movie clips. Please check back to find out what’s been going on!

This will be our first launch and we are seeking funding for the primary reusable materials and equipment such as GPS tracker, parachute, and payload box.
